Umendra School of Indian Classical Dance is a school that teaches you the beauty and elegance of Bharatanatyam. Bharatanatyam is a major form of Indian classical dance that originated in state of Tamilnadu. It is one of eight forms of dance recognized by the Sangeet Natak Akademi and it expresses South Indian religious themes and spiritual ideas, particularly of Shaivism, Vaishnavism and Shaktism.
The Teacher
Uma Rushyenthiran- a Srilankan origin settled in Melbourne- commenced her dancing career at the age of 5 under the expert guidance of here Guru Kalasuri Srimathy Vasugy Jagatheeswaran in Colombo, and later completed a Bachelor Degree in Fine arts from Kalai Kaveri College of Fine Arts-affiliated with Bharathidasan University, Tamil Nadu, India, a completed successfully as a Gold medalist- University First- and was honoured by Dr.Bala Murali Krishna at her graduation.During her college years, she also worked as a Dance Teacher for part time Diploma Students and comleted Arangertrams for 14 students. In 2001 she held her Arangetram in Trichy, India and siince then, she has performed and choreographed a number of classical and creative dances in various parts of India and Srilanka. She has also completed Mohiniyatam, Kathak and vocal during her college days and holds another bachelor's degree in Law and a Masters degree in public administration from India.
